Despite dominating large spells of their latest match against England, Denmark failed to make their chances count and for the second time at Euro 2024, had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw. That was also the scoreline as they failed to beat Slovenia on matchday one and now their mission is simple; beat Serbia in their final Group C fixture or face the prospect of failing to qualify for the knockout rounds.
A point could still be enough to progress as one of the best third-placed sides but as they’ve now won just one of their last ten group stage games at a major tournament (Euro/World Cup), the pressure will be on to secure all three points to make sure. Unbeaten across their six matches in 2024 (W3, D3), manager Kasper Hjulmand will still be confident that his side can get the better of Serbia in this one, a side that they’ve beaten in each of their last three meetings by a combined 8-1 scoreline.
Luka Jović’s 95th minute strike saved Serbia’s blushes in their last outing as they battled to a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in Munich. Even despite that stalemate, Dragan Stojković’s side begin this last matchday sat bottom of Group C - after losing 1-0 to England on MD1 - and unlike their opposition in this final clash, they know that it's win or bust for their chances of reaching the Round of 16.
A glance at their recent form suggests that grabbing the all-important three points here could be a tall order, as Serbia have won just four of their last 13 internationals over the past year (D3, L6). Much of that inconsistent form emanates from poor defensive performances, as across that stint they’ve kept just two clean sheets whilst in major tournaments their winless run stands at seven consecutive outings (D2, L5) - all of which saw them concede - which hardly inspires much additional confidence.
Players to watch: Christian Eriksen netted on matchday one for Denmark whilst he also scored in his last H2H back in March 2022. After striking last time out, Jović will be looking to score in consecutive internationals for Serbia for the first time since September 2022.
