Silla 신라 | 新羅, along with Baekje and Goguryeo, formed the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The kingdom of Silla stood until 935 AD. It lasted around 990 years and had 56 kings and queens, making it one of the longest-running dynasties in human history.
In this episode, we will discuss the late stage of the Golden Age of Silla. We will look at the life of Jang Bogo 장보고, a very powerful warlord and naval commander that was known throughout East Asia. His life reflects the highs and lows of Silla at the time with its political games and assassinations.
We will then look at the decline of the Silla empire with Queen Jinseong 진성여왕, the rebellions of Gung Ye 궁예 and Gyeon Hwon 견훤 and the creation of Hubaekje 후백제, Taebong 태봉 and final unification by Goryeo 고려 .
Next, we will look at the cultural achievements of Silla and its foreign relations. We will take a look at the Emile Bell 성덕대왕신종, Cheomseongdae 첨성대, the guilt-bronze Maitreya 금동 미륵보살 반가상, Hwangnyongsa 황룡사, Seokguram Grotto 석굴암, Bulguksa Temple 불국사 and more. We will also discuss Silla’s relationship with Persia, China and Japan.
Finally, we will take a brief look at historical TV dramas set during this period.
