In chapter 19 of To Kill a Mockingbird, the trial of Tom Robinson continues. The courtroom is packed with both black and white individuals, all awaiting the outcome. Mayella Ewell, the alleged victim, takes the stand and tries to come across as fragile and helpless. However, Atticus Finch's powerful cross-examination exposes inconsistencies in Mayella's testimony. He reveals that Tom Robinson had only tried to help Mayella with her chores and was physically incapable of committing the crime he is accused of. Despite Atticus's efforts, the racial prejudices of the time make it difficult for the jury to see the truth, leaving the outcome of the trial uncertain.
