Open the damper fully.
Pick small pieces of wood, easier to light.
Wood is not overflowing the grate, space between wood and little smoke.
Not very much sizzle in the wood.
This is a good fire.

There shouldn't be smoke coming out the front of the fireplace.
Shouldn't smell the fire.
