Here are the 10 audience retention mistakes, work on improving these to get more watch time on your future videos. 10 YouTube audience retention tips would be to do the opposite of these mistakes.
1. Thumbnail and title of your video don’t match your video’s content. If you try to pull a bait and switch by using a thumbnail and title that don’t accurately describe your YouTube video, your viewers will leave as soon as they figure out it’s not what they expected.
2. No hook at the beginning of your video. Tell the viewer they are in the right place as soon as the video begins. If they are unsure if the video doesn’t think they made the right choice by clicking on your video, they will leave in the first few seconds.
3. Include a channel intro, especially before your hook. We removed our channel intro, it is a waste of 5-10 seconds, it provides no value to the viewer. Get right into your content to improve your watch time.
4. Channel pitch at the beginning of your video. Again, this provides no value. This is probably the first video the viewer has seen on your channel. They don’t know if they want to subscribe yet. Provide value or entertainment before asking them to subscribe. Wasting their time in the beginning of the video will hurt your audience retention.
5. Not giving the audience a reason to watch until the end. Don’t give all the important information away in the first minute of a ten-minute video. Don’t make content longer than it needs to be. Have something important at the beginning to keep the viewer watching, but also give them a reason to watch until the end. We normally offer some type of bonus to keep the viewer watching until the end. This will help with your watch time as the viewer sticks around to see the bonus at the end.
6. Don’t review the audience retention of your videos. YouTube Studio gives you amazing analytics. Review the audience retention and the relative audience retention charts to see what kept your audience engaged and what caused them to leave. Learn from what you see and make your future content better. Improve your audience retention with each uploaded video.
7. Record the entire video from the same angle. If the scenery of the video never changes in the video you won’t retain your audience, they will get bored and leave. Change up the shots to keep them viewing longer.
8. No graphics or b-roll. Add other visual elements to your video. Again change is good. Add graphics and b-roll to mix it up and keep increase watch time.
9. Cut out all boring, unnecessary parts. Edit out extra words (and, um, like, etc.) Remove as much of the boring or dull parts as possible to keep the video moving along retaining the viewers' attention throughout.
10. Don’t create videos your subscribers didn’t sign up to see. If your subscribers love your videos, they will watch them from start to finish, even sitting through the boring parts. If you create videos your subscribers don’t like, maybe some click on it to check it out, but get bored and leave early. This is a really bad audience retention signal, if your own subscribers don’t even like this video, why should YouTube promote the video to other potential viewers?
