During the First World War, over 200,000 Irish troops fought against the Germans. However, in World War 2, Ireland stayed almost entirely neutral. This was due to a few reasons. For hundreds of years, Ireland had been owned and brutally dominated by the British Empire. Thus, after having recently gained independence and fighting a brutal civil war, there was little appetite to join the British as brothers in arms against the Germans. Some members of the IRA even went so far as to provoke a war against the British although they were not successful. However, Over 70,000 Irish troops joined the war on the side of the allies, even though the Irish government decreed that anyone who joined hostilities would be banned form employment by the Government for 7 years.
