Rome’s drinking fountains are one of the most fascinating parts of the city, I think. Not only are they very safe to drink, they are part of an ancient network of Roman Empire ingenuity where water from aqueducts were drawn into town and released from drinking fountains for the local people (and now tourists).
Hundreds of thousands of litres of pure spring water burst forth from various fountains around the city each day, and have done so (in one form of another) for the last two thousand years.
If you’re like me, this is an exciting prospect each time you find a new fountain!
