Presenting this fully restored first edition Rolex Oyster Perpetual in stainless steel, thought to be from the early 60s, reconditioned to the highest standards using original Rolex parts.
The 1002 was the first version of the Oyster Perpetual, which Rolex later developed into the Air King (and a dated version which became the ever popular DateJust). This model carries the original, and first, calibre 1560, which was used between 1959 and 1965. It is noteworthy that this calibre 1560 was part of the 1500 range of movements, being Rolex’s first thoroughbred movement developed in-house.
The reference number and serial have worn away in the piece; however, the 1002 reference can just be made out. The reference is still clearly visible on the inside of the case-back. The serial is also somewhat still visible under examination. It begins with ‘57’, has six digits and therefore dates the watch to 1960.
The original dial was in a poor state and has thus been expertly refinished by Nicolas Watch Co. We have refinished to a pearlised white, as was thought to be the original dial colour. The dial’s gold Rolex crown and baton markers are original. Also note the original early style ‘Alpha’ hands; another indication of the watch’s age and provenance.
During the restoration, the watch case received attention to remedy deterioration to certain parts, including the crown tube area. Only original Rolex parts were used during the restoration, and the watch is now fully functional and holding excellent time. However, the watch is no longer (and cannot be made to be) waterproof.
The watch has been finished with a complimentary royal blue lizard strap and carries an original Rolex buckle from the same era.
The watch is in near mint condition given its age, is fully validated as original and comes complete with a Nicolas Watch Co. Certificate of Validation.
The item has been priced sensibly according to its historic relevance; however, all reasonable offers will be considered.
The watch is available to view in Central London by appointment only.
