St Etheldreda first built an Abbey Church in Ely way back in AD 673. The building standing today dates to 1083 and was granted Cathedral status in 1109. Ely Cathedral is now seen as one of the wonders of the medieval world. Join me and climb nearly 200 steps to the top of the incredible octagon lantern tower. This timber structure is suspended high over the centre of the Cathedral and was first completed in 1342. In the years following the Reformation in the 16th century and after the dissolution of the monasteries maintenance was seldom carried out at the cathedral. By the 1760s the lantern roof was rotten and unsafe until it was restored in the 19th century. The Lady Chapel was completed in 1349 but scars of the reformation under Henry VIII are still visible with exquisite figures in the lower niches defaced in 1539 and pedestals lie empty above the niches where statues once stood.
