Qatar's foreign minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visits Lebanon, meets powerful parliament speaker.
His visit comes after Qatar's announcement to support Lebanon's army with $60 million.
STORYLINE:
Qatar's foreign minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Lebanon's long-time parliament speaker Nabih Berri on Friday.
No statement statement was issued following their meeting.
Al Thani, also Qatar's deputy prime minister, arrived in Beirut Thursday, where he met with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
His visit comes ahead of a meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Saturday in the Lebanese capital.
He is also expected to meet with other senior officials.
Qatar on Thursday announced a $60 million donation to the cash-strapped Lebanese army.
In July last year, Qatar announced it would support the Lebanese army with a monthly donation of 70 tons of foodstuff every month for a year.
Since Lebanon's crisis erupted in late 2019, the Lebanese pound has lost over 90% of its value, and three quarters of its population have slipped into poverty.
Since then, the country has been mired by rampant power cuts, skyrocketing food prices, and unemployment.
The economic crisis is rooted in decades of corruption and poor planning by the ruling class, running the Mediterranean country since the end of the 1975-90 civil war.
Lebanon's nearly three-year economic meltdown is putting unprecedented pressure on the U.S.-backed army's operational abilities, wiping out soldiers' salaries and wrecking morale.
The deterioration in Lebanon puts at risk one of the few forces unifying Lebanon and over the past years the army has been receiving assistance, including food supplies, from friendly countries.
