Aljamain Sterling is the current UFC bantemweight world champion, but the circumstances by which he became champion were less than desirable.
In 2021, Aljamain Sterling took an illegal knee from then champion Petyr Yan in a fight Aljo was clearly losing.
And many fans have the impression that Aljo was acting and faking how hurt he was in order to become the first UFC champion to earn the belt via disqualification.
And Aljo, did not back down from the backlash, putting the blame on Yan, and owning the character of a deserving champion.
And while the fans and media expected Aljo to lose in the rematch, his superior grappling earned him a split decision victory over Yan in April 2022.
And when many fans hoped he would lose to TJ Dillashaw in October 2022, TJ dislocated his shoulder from a previous injury, and got smashed in the fight.
Now many fans feel that someone who shouldn’t have the belt got to keep it because of a very close decision and an injured challenger, but is this really his fault?
