If you're an athlete who box jumps in the gym, then you'll want to make sure you're not making this mistake...
Because it defeats the purpose of the jump if you do...
See, most athletes are made to believe that the purpose of the box is to have a target to jump to... right?
Wrong! (but if you guessed incorrectly, it's not your fault).
The real reason athletes should jump to a box is to lower the ground reaction forces of landing...
This allows athletes to work on power production without having to worry about managing the repetitive stress of high impacts that they have to absorb...
Except, no one ever tells athletes that, so they always try and push their limits by landing on ever-increasing box heights...
Without realising that it's actually defeating the whole purpose because it now adds stress back to the landing... or prevents them from actually producing maximal force in the first place.
And if you jump like this for long enough... you'll probably end up wasting your time... and more importantly, the opportunity to get more explosive.
In this education video, plyometrics expert and Founder of Athletes Authority Lachlan Wilmot demonstrates how most athletes make this mistake... and what you can do about it.
And, in the event you have a coach who encourages you to jump to higher boxes even if your knees are around your ears... send them this to give them the low-down on all things jumping high.
