MAIN ENGINE TYPE: DMD MAN 6S60ME-C8.2TII, 9800KW CSO, PISTON OVERHAULING (OVERVIEW) - Alu-Coat Cermet Ring Replacement - VSL_003
To increase the margin against damage of the piston rings and cylinder liners, which will eventually result into short overhauling notice, we replaced the piston ring configuration into hard alum+cermet coated piston rings from normal cast iron type.
The liner surface is still satisfactory and the wave cut surfaces have not been yet worn away except with minor polished on the TDC area measuring at -0.70mm wear.
Total engine running hours, about 12000hrs with a cylinder basic feed rate 0.86 g/KW.hr
Cermet is a composite of partly ceramic and part metal material. It combines the best properties of a ceramic, which is a high temperature resistance and known hardness material. The Alu+cermet coating on the piston ring in-between the running surfaces increases the reliability of the cylinder. It increases the margin towards scuffing.
The cermet-coated rings continue to perform well in any episode of momentary oil film breakdown. Wherein, the operators should usually operate the engine with proper equipment monitoring instruments onboard such as scrape down analyser for the iron "PPM" readings. On this kind of situation, if timely discovered, a prudent action of initiating an increase of lubrication and a reduction of engine load can be made. Thus in most of many cases, the oil film will eventually be restored and be recovered.
