The chemotherapy and radiation treatments given to cancer patients to shrink their tumors don’t always work and often have severe side effects. Sri Krishna, a postdoctoral researcher in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is investigating an alternative treatment strategy that uses infection-fighting immune cells from patients’ own bodies to seek out and destroy their cancers. The approach, called adoptive cell therapy, has already seen success as a treatment for skin cancer, but his work will help expand its use to other forms of the disease, which could ultimately save many lives.
