Jose Mourinho got off to a good start at Tottenham, beating London rivals West Ham 3-2 away from home. We’ll be looking at changes in Jose Mourinho’s philosophy from his first Premier League game in charge at Spurs.
One of the first noticeable changes in Tottenham’s starting 11 was bringing Eric Dier back into the side. Mauricio Pochettino seemed to not favour having Dier in his midfield, instead the Argentine coach had Harry Winks as the deepest man at times - with Moussa Sissoko being more of the ball carrier and protecting England international, Harry Winks when he got on the ball. Jose Mourinho had Eric Dier & Harry Winks as the holding midfielders against Manuel Pellegrini, setting up in a 4-2-3-1 at the London stadium.
First let’s compare Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side to his current Tottenham set up. At Man United he largely set up in a 4-3-3, that built up in a 2-2-5-1. The two sitting midfielders tended to be a ball winner and a deep-lying playmaker with the ball winner as more of a sitting destroyer and the playmaker in a more supportive role, willing to join the attack when possible. At Spurs this is different. He sets up in a 4-2-3-1, but builds in an asymmetric 3-2-5 - aside from shape, the big difference is the roles of these sitting midfielders, the more reserved of the pair is now a playmaker - with a ball winner in the advanced box to box role as they cover the attacking right back. The other difference is the support around the central striker. At Man Utd this was Romelu Lukaku but often the Belgian international would find himself isolated. At Spurs, Harry Kane is the lone striker but the attacking midfielders surrounding him allow the forward to link up early and keep the ball moving.
Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min all played a part in Tottenham’s goals on Saturday. If Jose Mourinho can get all three firing week in week out behind a striker like Harry Kane - the Portugueese coach could build one of the best attacking lines in European football. The Premier League and even the top four could be out of reach for Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur this season, but we could see a Champions League surprise from them. Jose might want to strengthen in defence over the January transfer window, but a back four of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose and Serge Aurier could be made good enough by the defensive tactician to see out the season and maybe even have another run at the Champions League.
Will Jose Mourinho succeed at Tottenham Hotspur?
