God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and helped them win dozens of wars, but time and time again, the Israelites turned to Baal, a Canaanite god, for their protection. Even when it was shown that Baal couldn't protect them, like in 1 Kings 18, the Israelites continued to give him respect.

Why is this? Why couldn't the Israelites reject Baal?
