June 17th, 1970. 47 years ago today, two top heavyweight contenders; “The Bellflower Belter" Jerry Quarry and Mac Foster aka "Big Mac 'The Knife" battled it out in Madison Square Garden. Prior to the main event, a special early birthday celebration was held in honor of the legendary "Manassa Mauler" Jack Dempsey. Reigning World Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier presented a gift to Dempsey, who would turn 75 in 7 days.

However, the tide turned in the 5th round after Quarry hurt Foster with lefts to the body followed by a barrage of punches and proceeded to finish a game Foster in the next round.
After this defeat, Foster picked up a win over Zora Folley and would late enjoy limited success at top level in the next 6 years; going 6-5 with notable losses to Henry Clark, Joe Bugner, Stan Ward
and Muhammad Ali. He retired in 1976 with a record of 30(30)-6, with all his wins by knockouts.
More than half of his wins were knockouts within 3 rounds or less. In retirement, Foster became a boxing coach for youths. He passed away in July 2010 at age 68.
Quarry continued fighting till 1977 after this victory but made 2 comebacks in 1983 and 1992 before retiring with a final record of 53(32)-9-4 with notable wins against Billy Daniels, Thad Spencer, Larry Middleton, Buster Mathis Sr, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Mac Foster, Floyd Patterson & Brian London (2x).
