ISIS SEIZES PALMYRA
According to London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, ISIS has seized the town of Palmyra on the outskirts of the city of Tadmur a 2,000 year old UNESCO site, after Syrian government troops withdrew from the region following clashes.Despite coalition airstrikes, ISIS has made significant gains in Syria and Iraq.
HAMMOND CONDEMNS ASSAD
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has condemned Syrian President Bashar al Assad following the release of the footage showing regime soldiers dropping barrel bombs on civilian areas in Aleppo. Hammond tweeted that Assad’s “lies” had been “exposed in shocking new footage of Syrian regime airmen lighting and dropping barrel bombs.” Assad had previously denied accusations his forces were targeting civilians with barrel bombs, going as far as to say his government does not own barrels, claiming he had not heard of the army using barrels, or cooking pots.
BIN LADEN DOCUMENTS DECLASSIFIED
The U.S. has declassified over one hundred documents found during the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in which Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed. The materials dubbed “Bin Laden’s Bookshelf” include mostly letters operation guidelines and policy notes.The U.S. also released 39 book titles, some which included U.S. foreign policy. The declassification comes a week after allegations that Pakistan’s military intelligence service had been holding Bin Laden from 2006 until his death in 2011. The U.S. has denied these claims.
NKURUNZIZA DOWNPLAYS CLASHES
Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has claimed that “99 percent” of the country is peaceful and upcoming elections will be held in peace. His comments on a nationally broadcasted address came amid continuing clashes on the streets of capital Bujumbura. On May 20th, Burundian police shot dead a soldier during clashes with demonstrators on the streets of the capital.
