A Tensilon test is a diagnostic test used to evaluate myasthenia gravis, which is a neuromuscular condition characterized by muscle weakness.
The test involves an injection of Tensilon or edrophonium after which your muscle strength is evaluated to determine whether your weakness is caused by MG or not.
Why the Test is Performed
Diagnose myasthenia gravis
Tell the difference between myasthenia gravis and other similar brain and nervous system conditions
Monitor treatment with oral anticholinesterase drugs
Results
You’ll likely be put on long-term anticholinesterase drug therapy if you’re diagnosed with MG
Your doctor might want you to undergo additional testing to confirm the diagnosis.
If an injection of Tensilon temporarily boosts your strength, the myasthenia gravis has gotten worse and you’ll need further treatment.
If the Tensilon injection makes you even weaker, then you might have too much anticholinesterase medication in your system.
