Russia, according to reports is trying to take control of uranium mines in Niger that a French government-run company currently owns. Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has reportedly been negotiating with Niger's military leaders about buying these assets from the French company Orano SA.
Russia is eyeing uranium assets in Niger, currently managed by a French state-controlled company, in a strategic move to bolster its nuclear resources. According to sources, Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear giant, has been negotiating with Niger’s military-led government to acquire these assets from France’s Orano SA. A Moscow insider, speaking anonymously, disclosed this development to Bloomberg.
A regional western diplomat suggested that the discussions likely centered on securing mining permits. In 2022, Niger contributed around 4% of the world's uranium mine production, according to the World Nuclear Association.
