Geothermal energy has historically been produced by driving turbines with steam, or with more modern technologies like organic rankine cycle systems. But new geothermal concepts like Closed Loop and EGS/Closed Loop hybrids may usher in a paradigm shift in how electrons are produced from geothermal resources. Advanced turbines designed to operate with supercritical CO2 and other organic fluids, and thermoelectric generation, which would allow for downhole energy production are on the horizon as potentially disruptive redesigns of topside geothermal operations. Where are these technologies in development, and how far are they from commercial reality? What are the benefits and challenges associated with these new technologies? What entities are trying these techniques in the field? Let’s explore.
