Beijing has announced it will continue military exercises around Taiwan in a move experts warn heightens the chance of an invasion.
Labor MP and incoming chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security Peter Khalil says this disproportionate and destabilising pattern of behaviour is deeply concerning to the region.
“Of course, it heightens the risk of miscalculation, and that’s not anything anyone wants across the region,” he told Sky News Australia.
“And that’s why our Foreign Minister, our Acting Prime Minister have been urging restraint and de-escalation as a response.
“We don’t want to see any unilateral change to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
“We want to lower temperatures, de-escalate, stabilise the situation and get back to a sort of a normal pattern of behaviours.
"So that’s why this is so deeply concerning.”
