The NFL offseason is always full of intrigue and excitement, and that inevitably includes the Miami Dolphins and the array of decisions Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel will have to make. Among the biggest and most important decisions that’ll need to be made is whether or not to give starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a contract extension or let him play out the fifth year of his rookie contract.
While the debate surrounding Tua Tagovailoa being the Dolphins long-term solution at quarterback remains a popular topic, today we discuss why giving Tagovailoa a contract extension is essentially a slam dunk for Chris Grier, Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins.
The quarterback market has been set by others in the 2020 NFL Draft class - including Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts - so we'd expect Tagovailoa’s contract to fall within $40-$50M per year.
If the Miami Dolphins were to let Tagovailoa to play out his 5th-year option they’d have the opportunity to block him from hitting NFL free agency next offseason by applying the franchise tag. However, the franchise tag for quarterbacks would likely be significantly higher than the Dolphins would like to pay.
With Super Bowl aspirations at the forefront for Miami Dolphins fans now is not the time to be involved in the quarterback carousel. The NFL quarterback market is always inflated, but the performance of Tua Tagovailoa over the last two years, and proving he can stay healthy for a full season, has put him in position to receive a hefty contract extension.
