Despite controversy over the legitimacy of Friday''''''''s elections, people on the streets of Tehran on Tuesday seemed less concerned with the voting process and more with what the new parliament would do to improve Iran.
People on the streets of Tehran said they would like to see the new government strengthen youth culture in the Islamic country and resolve problems like inflation and unemployment.
Abadgaran Iran-e-Islami leader, Gholamali Haddadadel, won the majority of votes in the Iranian capital and his party is expected to set the tone in the new parliament that convenes in June.
The immediate concern for Iran''''''''s conservative groups is calming the tension caused by the last week''''''''s elections.
The major reform parties and politicians had called for a boycott of the vote as they regarded the mass disqualification of liberal candidates as fixing the polls in the hardliners'''''''' favour.
The results gave the conservatives a majority in the 290-seat parliament, a position they lost in the 2000 elections.
Monday''''''''s debate in parliament degenerated into a shouting match and pushing and shoving between conservatives and reformers.
Liberals termed the polls a "historic fiasco."
Haddadadel promised the conservative control of parliament would not cause a "violent" backlash against the relaxation of the strict Islamic social code, but he suggested a slower pace would be adopted.
Under President Mohammad Khatami''''''''s presidency, Iranians have tolerated more Western-style music, satellite dishes and more revealing clothes for women.
The conservative victory denies liberals an important forum to challenge hardline policies. It also leaves reformist Khatami without a key base of support.
The nationwide turnout stood at slightly more than 50 percent, a noticeable drop from the 67.2 percent in the last parliamentary elections in 2000.
In Tehran, the capital, just 33 percent of voters turned out, the Interior Ministry said.
