In this History For Humans episode, students learn President Jefferson's time in office and the major events of Jefferson's presidency. The focus question asks students to consider if President Jefferson was able to stay true to his vision of the nation. They learn how he tried to simplify the federal government, reduce its powers, and how he hoped to give more power directly to the people- even while he ignored and even perpetuated slavery.
They also learn how he cut taxes, the military, government officials, and the national debt and the controversy surrounding the Louisiana Purchase and how Jefferson was forced to adopt a Hamiltonian 'loose interpretation' of the Constitution in order to make double the size of the United States. It covers Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery as well as the hated Embargo Act and why Jefferson thought closing off shipping could be a peaceful alternative to war but how it brought ruin to the American economy.
This is the fourth and final episode of our series and unit, "A More Perfect Union" that tells the story from of the United States after gaining independence under the Articles of Confederation, the writing of the Constitution, and the Washington, Adams, and Jefferson's presidency.
