Master the Rib Stitch!
Known by it’s other names “ribbing stitch” or simply “ribbing”, this classic stitch pattern is used to create the fancy-looking pleats you see on knitted garments – usually on cuffs and collars, but you can make entire projects with the rib stitch as well! Ribbed fabric is super stretchy and form-fitting, it also lays flat and looks the same on the front and back.
There are multiple kinds of rib stitch patterns. Today we'll show you how to knit 1x1 ribbing and 2x2 ribbing. These beginner-friendly knitting stitch patterns call for you to knit a regular repeat of knit and purl stitches (k1, p1 or k2, p2 when abbreviated). There are also more intricate rib stitches including broken rib, fisherman’s rib, and twisted rib. We’ll get to those in another video!
In this tutorial, we go over the basic technique for knitting the rib stitch, and we share a few tips to help you achieve a neat and tidy project.
