Tummy time is the period during the day that your baby spends his awake time in the prone position.

Tummy time is an important motor activity for the motor, visual and sensory developmental process in a baby's life.

Before 1994, all babies were predominately slipping on their stomachs. So, while falling asleep and waking up between sleep cycles or waking up after a sleep, these babies had spent tummy time, but it was not a planned activity as it is today.

According to the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics after 1994, babies had to sleep on their backs to avoid "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome."

This campaign was a huge success for SIDS(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), but it increased parents fearless putting their babies in a prone position. Thus, infants experienced a lack of time to spend on their tummy and there was a growing number of infants with postural plagiocephaly, positional torticollis, delayed age milestones, or sensory deficits.

Following these results, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed its recommendation and suggested that babies' daily activities could be in a prone position while they are awake under parental supervision.
