How Muscle Vs. Tendons Grow
Muscle Protein Synthesis:
1️⃣ Training activates the Quiescent satellite cells
These satellite cells have the potential to turn into muscle fiber proteins, but they need a stimulus.
2️⃣ During and following a workout, a hormonal cascade spreads the word throughout the body (“It’s Time to build muscle”)
3️⃣ Satellite cells differentiate and fuse together and take on properties of the existing damaged fibers to repair them and make them bigger (hypertrophy)
4️⃣ You notice the gains 💪🏼
Tendons and ligaments grow via Collagen Synthesis:
1️⃣ Training causes micro trauma to the collagen matrix
2️⃣ The hormonal cascade lead by growth hormone and IGF-1 stimulate collagen synthesis
3️⃣ Collagen is added to the tendon to increase tensile strength, stiffness, and overall make the tendon stronger.
Shifting our training toward more isometrics and heavy slow controlled resistance exercises will bias a bit more toward collagen synthesis vs. your typical hypertrophy programming for muscle protein synthesis.
