I went to climb a first free ascent on Kjerag, which is an 800m wall in norway.
All the pitches of the route had been climbed but some only aided, which means the previous climbers had pulled on gear to get up. We wanted to free climb which means using the rocks features only for hands and feet.
Starting at 6 in the morning, the lower half of the route went well with all A1 and A2 pitches getting freed. We were then hit with rock fall in the middle of the wall, which ended up making it into the local newspaper!
Higher on the wall, the chimneys were tight an slimy, plus we got hit by a rainstorm and had to climb damp rock to the finish. progression was slow, it got dark, so we ended up getting back to the tent 24 hours after starting.
