Russia and Ukraine Agree to Ship Grain from Odesa...And Then Russia Attacked Odesa
What's Going on With Shipping?
July 23, 2022
In this episode, Sal Mercogliano - former merchant mariner and maritime historian at Campbell University - discusses the agreement between Russia and Ukraine to resume grain shipments out of the ports of Odesa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny. Just a day after the agreement was signed, Russia attacked the port of Odesa with missiles, including one that landed close to the grain facilities in the port. This video examines the agreement, the recent attack, and what needs to be accomplished before grain can be moved from the three ports, along with hurdles, such as minesweeping, procuring of ships and crews, the clearing of existing ships from the ports that have been sitting since February, the obtaining of war-risk insurance, and the potential for naval escorts.
