Harrison "Jack" Schmitt on "Apollo 17 and beyond"
Harrison "Jack" Schmitt was the Lunar Module Pilot, or LMP, on Apollo 17, the sixth and final lunar landing flight of the Apollo program. As a professional geologist he was the first scientist on the moon and indeed the first of the first group of astronaut-scientists to fly in space at all.
Apollo 17 launched on December 7, 1972 and its Lunar Module Challenger landed on the Moon on December 11, 1972.
Together with Commander Gene Cernan he performed three EVA's to explore the Valley of Taurus-Littrow, for a record total time of a little over 22 hours. They also drove the third Lunar Rover for a record 35,74 kilometres and collected 109 kilos of lunar samples, yet another record.
All this time Command Module Pilot Ron Evans was orbiting the Moon in Command Module America, performing a number of scientific experiments and lunar observations. The crew returned to Earth on December 19, 1972. The last lunar mission was a resounding success and as such a worthy finale to the Apollo program.
