Infectious diseases expert Professor Peter Collignon says there is “no evidence" Sydney’s COVID-19 outbreak is “going exponentially out of control”.
“If you look at the numbers per day it’s tracking along the same line as the Crossroads one did last winter and in fact the Avalon cluster,” he said.
“What will happen over the next week, none of us know.
“But so far we are seeing at least stabilisation of numbers. I think It will fluctuate up or down. We might see 30 cases today, even 40 the day after, but hopefully it’s more around 20.
“But so far there’s no evidence it’s going exponentially out of control.”
Professor Collignon told Sky News the impact of the lockdown on case numbers will not be seen until the end of the week since the average incubation period for the virus is five days.
“So, any effect we’re seeing now is what was put in place last week and the effect of a lockdown won’t be evident until the end of this week or the weekend.”
