September 13th, 2014. Undefeated 36 year old Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr took on 31 year old Marcos Maidana aka “El Chino” in a rematch months after their explosive 1st encounter. His WBA, WBC & The Ring Welterweight Titles as well as his WBC Super Welterweight Championship were on the line.
Prefight records; Mayweather 46(26)-0-0, Maidana 35(31)-4-0.
Entering the fight, the challenger who was the former WBA Champion at 140 & 147 pounds held notable victories over the likes of Adrien Broner, Josesito Lopez, DeMarcus Corley, Erik Morales, Victor Cayo & Victor Ortiz.
On the other hand, the defending champion had won world titles in 5 different weight divisions at 130, 135, 140, 147 & 154 pounds. As a seasoned 18 year veteran, he had defeated top oppositions such as Arturo Gatti, DeMarcus Corley, Jesús Chávez, Angel Manfredy, Carlos Hernandez, Genaro Hernandez, Sharmba Mitchell, Phillip N'dou, Gregorio Vargas, Victor Ortiz, Shane Mosley, Carlos Baldomir, Zab Judah, Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, Victoriano Sosa, Miguel Cotto, Marcos Maidana & Jose Luis Castillo (2x).
Overall, it was not nearly as explosive as their 1st fight but it was competitive in the 1st half until Mayweather made a masterful adjustment (as he did in many bouts) going into the 2nd half to outwork the powerful but frustrated Maidana who was largely unable to find his mark, and was often clocked with sharp counters.
From rounds 1 to 6, it was fairly competitive with Mayweather having the better of most exchanges with his potshots and evasive defense.
In round 8, Mayweather bizarrely claimed that Maidana had bitten him during a clinch and in the replay it appeared that it did happen but it cannot be confirmed. However, it was evident that Mayweather was covering Maidana’s nose with his glove to inhibit his breathing which might have precipitated the bite.
In round 10, Maidana who was already trailing in the cards lost a point for pushing Floyd to the canvas.
In round 12, Maidana rallied hard to no avail as Mayweather was on his bicycle for the most part knowing he had the fight in the bag and did not want to take unnecessary risks.
Referee Kenny Bayless was criticized for allegedly favoring the champion as he often immediately break up clinches on the ropes which inhibited infighting that would probably be in favor of the challenger.
After 36 minutes of action, Floyd Mayweather Jr retained his titles and improved his unbeaten record to 47(26)-0-0 via UD12 with scores of 115-112 & 116-111 (2x).
On August 9th 2016, Marcos Maidana announced his retirement at 33 years of age after being inactive for nearly 2 years after his rematch with Mayweather.
His final record stood at 35(31)-5-0.
