You wish to take the IELTS but you can’t wrap your head around the strange marking system and the band scores? No worries, GlobalExam is here to explain how the band scores work per section!
The IELTS exam indeed has a unique scoring system, unlike the other English language exams. It is therefore normal to be confused at first.
Starting with the Listening and Reading sections:
- Each correct answer out of 40 questions is given 1 mark.
- The scores are then converted to the IELTS nine-band scale.
The Writing section uses specific marking criteria:
- Task Achievement: did you follow the instructions? Did you answer the questions?
- Coherence and Cohesion: it checks if your writing is well-organized!
- Lexical Resource: it checks your ability to use a wide range of vocabulary.
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy: it checks your ability to use various grammatical structures correctly.
The Speaking section also uses specific marking criteria:
- Fluency & Coherence
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Pronunciation
In this video we will also be going over the minimum required score if you wish to apply for a job or to enroll in a college.
