"Training BJJ 2 Days Per Week is a Waste of Time - The Hard Pill To Swallow"
#bjj #jiujitsu #bjjpodcast
This is a question that I posed to Adam during the recording of Episode "#027 - What It Takes To Get a BJJ Black Belt... Jiu Jitsu Belt System and much more!" of the Beyond Jiu Jitsu Podcast.
This question was inspired by my observation of people's training habits and other popular content creators in the BJJ niche addressing this exact question, specifically Chewjitsu and Chris Matakas. So, naturally, I wanted to ask my coach to weigh in on the conversation and find out from his perspective what he thought.
What I have taken from the conversation is that the amount of training you put into the gym is going to reflect the level of jiu jitsu you're able to obtain and in what time frame. If you're someone that can ONLY EVER train 2 days per week and you're not willing or unable to budge on that for whatever reason then it may take you a very long time to achieve a black belt in the sport and depending on the opinion of your coach, it may be out of your reach.
However, if you're putting in the work outside of the gym whenever you can be it studying instructionals, consuming YouTube content, listening to podcast, drilling or anything else that otherwise engages you with the sport then you can chalk that up to a form of "training" and you will progress.
I guess it really depends on what the sport means to you and what your goals are with your training. At the end of the day, not everyone wants to be a black belt world champion, and that's perfectly fine, but in the words of Adam, you need to manage your expectations and you may have a peak of a very strong blue belt.
If you want to listen to the full conversation this clip is from Episode #027 of the Beyond Jiu Jitsu Podcast, streaming now on all platforms.
