One week before the onset of World War II, the Third Reich signs a secret non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union. Intending to eliminate the independent Polish state, the Nazis invade Poland from the West, while the Red Army attacks from the East. Within weeks, hundreds of thousands of Poles are captured and sent to concentration camps. Joseph Stalin orders the execution of twenty two thousand Polish citizens, extinguishing the nation’s defensive, creative and intellectual potential. When mass graves are discovered in the Katyn forest, the Soviet Union blames the Nazis. The cover-up continues for decades until Mikhail Gorbachev formally expresses profound regret and officially admits Soviet responsibility for the massacre.
