In a 5 year old baby, the child should sleep for about 9 to 12 hours in a day in the whole 24 hours. So in the night the child should be getting a proper sleep. There are different cycles of sleep, when the child is in the light sleep or in the deep sleep. in the deep sleep the baby should not be having any movements as such, but if there is any difficulty like if there is any snoring, or any obstruction in the airways because of any adenoid enlargement or tonsil enlargement, the baby may be having snoring or opening their mouth and sleeping, they will not be having any sound sleep. Another thing is when the baby has any worm infestation. When they have worm infestation, they may have itching in the perianal region and teeth grinding. This results in a lack of sound sleep. If such a situation exists, it has to be assessed and it has to be treated. If a child is not having a proper sleep, then they will have difficulty in activity in the next day. They have impaired concentration levels, learning disabilities. Child can have emotional disturbances, cognitive disturbances and the child may have moodiness, all these can be seen if the child has absence of sound sleep. If this is a chronic problem and chronic sleep deprivation I there, this in turn takes a toll on the health and may lead to weakened immune responses and leading to more infections like respiratory and gastrointestinal or immunomodulatory functions will not be normal and hence increases the number of infections in the baby.
