Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has made his first foreign visit since 2011 when an uprising against his authoritarian rule broke out; the reason for the trip - to say a big thank you to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Kremlin's air strikes in Syria.
Russia began its aerial campaign in the Middle Eastern state on September 30, claiming to be targeting terror group Islamic State.
