The recently re-elected president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, has been accused of lying about a point on his resume that, if known, would have invalidated his election as president in 2016. A Slovenian media outlet, 'Prava', claims that Ceferin falsely stated on his resume that he was a member of the board of directors of Olimpija Bezigrad between 2006 and 2011, which is necessary experience to apply for the presidency of UEFA.[0] However, 'Prava' suggests that this is not true.[0] The lie would have enabled him to run for the presidency of UEFA in 2016, and if confirmed, would harm his position as president of UEFA.[0] Ceferin has already received similar accusations in the past, but was able to demonstrate that there were no irregularities in his resume.[0]
The Slovenian Football Federation lists a document that states that Ceferin did hold that position at the Slovenian club, which could exacerbate the situation.[1] The gravity of the matter lies in the obligation that UEFA's statutes indicate to have carried out such work to aspire to its presidency, and this alleged lie was made at a time when he was competing for the position he currently holds.[2] Ceferin was re-elected this week for a new four-year term until 2027, during the Congress of the continental organization in Lisbon.[2]
Tensions between Ceferin and the media group 'Prava' have been going on for some time and are related to the poor relationship between the UEFA leader and the business owner, former Prime Minister Janez Jansa.[0] However, it remains to be seen if this information could put his term in jeopardy as UEFA president, and if any further investigations will be opened by any of the football organizations.[2] The UEFA has not yet commented on the matter.[2]
Ceferin, a strong opponent of the Super League promoted by Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus, has been in the news in recent days for his firmness in the 'Negreira Case'.[2] The Slovenian leader has just been re-elected as president of UEFA for the next four years, so he will remain in office until 2027.[1] This document on his resume is an important requirement to be president of UEFA, and if it is confirmed that he lied about it, his election as president in 2016 would have been null and, consequently, his re-election until 2027.
