Sunnyvale, CA - The GetSportsFocus Rapid Fire Tournament made its debut yesterday, March 3rd at Fremont HS in Sunnyvale, Ca.
Seven teams participated, including two high school squads from IAM Fitness 510 in Oakland.
The Bay Area Titans from the East Bay entered the tournament as the favorite to win after a second place finish at the Quick6 7v7 Air to the Throne tournament two weeks prior. The Titans featured WR Buddy Muldrow who made a few acrobatic catches and QB Joey Aguilar who had a solid performance as well.
The best performances of the day came from Pro-Sport Training led by Coach AJ Rangel and Grindmode Elite coached by Brandon Younger. The two San Jose based squads ended up in the finals for an epic match that included some rain, strong winds and dramatic plays.
Grindmode's only loss during the preliminary rounds was to the Titans, but Younger’s group earned revenge later in the day, eliminating the Titans in the semi-final round.
Pro-Sport, on the other hand, entered the championship undefeated. Their toughest challenge during the day was Express 7v7, led by a group of playmaker in DBs Evan Williams and Justin Sinclair. However, Pro-Sport’s receivers Ethan Janto and Tommy Dunham outsized their opponents, played a more physical game, and dominated man to man coverage.
Gregory Elliott II sealed the championship victory for Grindmode Elite with less than a minute left on the clock. Pro-Sport Training was in comeback mode when Elliott II picked off a pass from QB Alejandro Flores intended for Isaiah Fernandez.
In spite of the final interception, Flores represented Silver Creek H.S. well, throwing 14 touchdowns and only two picks. Janto, who plays quarterback at Santa Teresa, reeled in most of Flores’ 14 scores with his solid 6'4", 200lb “Gronkowski”-like frame.
Grindmode Elite's Justin Munday also had a stellar performance, throwing 15 touchdown passes. He was voted as the First Place Inc. Championship Game Offensive MVP, while Elliott II took home Defensive MVP honors.
When the dust settled, Grindmode Elite took home the inaugural GSF Rapid Fire championship plaque. A custom made, one of a kind design by long time GetSportsFocus' partner First Place Inc.
The tournament's MVP was unanimous, Ethan Janto of Pro-Sport Training. He "Gronked", "Mossed" and "Odelled" everyone throughout the day. The highlights speaks for itself.
