Who is Melchizedek in the bible?
Melchizedek is only referenced in 3 places in the bible:
Genesis 14:17-20
Psalm 110:4
Hebrews 7
When Abram meets Melchizedek in Genesis 14, Melchizedek is both king and priest of Salem. He also accepts a tithe from Abram while offering wine and bread.
King David writes about him in Psalms 110 (Quoted by Jesus in Matthew 22).
In it we are told:
The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
- Psalm 110:4
In Hebrews 7 Melchizedek is described as
"without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually."
-Hebrews 7:3
Hebrews 7 continues to describe Melchizedek as a greater priest and a different priesthood than the Levitical priesthood. He does not share genealogy with Abraham, or any of the descendant tribes, including Judah.
However, Jesus who is a descendant of Judah will be "a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek"
