Punches are normally used as a defense or counter to the front leg. Here's how to do it effectively!
The Goods:
There are three Variations:
1) Slide in and Punch: Cover enough distance to put your rear hand in distance to punch. (In most cases should be aggressively moving).
2) Front Arm Control Over Front Leg: Use your front arm to negate the front leg offense or defense of your opponent. Once the Front Leg is nullified, Punch over to hit the armor.
3) Lead Leg Cancel into Punch: Use your own Front Leg as a shield, just to nullify the front leg of the opponent. Once the front leg is nullified, use that momentum and punch on top.
Always remember that the punch is scored subjectively, so you must sell your point. Things that help that are pulling your hand back (ill-advised in actual self-defense scenarios... but then again this isn't an actual self-defense scenario...) and kiyaping/yelling confidently as this also helps sell to the judges that you scored a point.
Lastly - Don't just do straight punches, you'll get kicked in the face! Whether on offense or defense, you need to mix up the types of defense or offense you do to keep your opponent guessing, then mix that punch in there!
