University of Sydney Nano Institute Director Professor Stephen Bartlett discusses the federal investment into quantum computing.
The Federal and Queensland governments will allocate close to a billion dollars of taxpayer funds to US tech firm PsiQuantum.
The investment will secure the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Brisbane, create 400 new jobs and place Australia at the forefront of quantum computing.
“That $1 billion is what is really needed now to get serious about manufacturing a quantum computer that's going to be useful for tomorrow’s problem,” Professor Bartlett told Sky News Australia.
“It is really able to do something quite different and solve new types of problems that are just sort of not possible with today’s supercomputers.
“The promise of quantum computing is that it is going to unlock a whole new potential to solve the problems, especially in new drugs, new materials and also around cryptography”.
