In 1972 Jacklin teed off at Muirfield in the 98th Open as the most successful British golfer since World War II. The son of a Scunthorpe truck driver, Jacklin had won the Open in 1969 and the US Open in 1972 - and that in an era of Nicklaus, Player, Palmer and Trevino.
By the 71st hole, Jacklin was tied for the lead with Trevino, his playing partner, and one shot clear of Nicklaus. He safely found the green on the par-five in a regulation three strokes. Supermex, who had been driving Jacklin mad all weekend with his incessant on-course chatter, was in trouble, off the green and in rough in four shots. A second Claret Jug beckoned Jacklin.
But Trevino somehow chipped in for an outrageous par save – his fifth hole-out from off the green of the weekend. A rattled Jacklin three-putted and, in shock, went on to bogey the last, which the Texan parred for his second Open title. Jacklin, however, would never again challenge for one of golf’s biggest four prizes.
It has been 41 years since that Sunday in Edinburgh, but the scars of defeat have still yet to fully heal. ‘It’s one of those things that you don’t forget,’ admitted Jacklin.
‘He made some audacious chip-ins in the last two rounds, some of which were outright flukes. But they went in and I kept thinking “He’s not going to beat me like that” but he did it at a critical time on 17.
