Let's get a close look at all of the components I selected for the new Scout AR concept rifle. I'm anticipating a LOT of blowback for various choices I've made, but I'm sticking to my guns (puns intended).

So what will we have once we combine all these elements? A solid AR-15, really. But by its very nature it should retain many of the favorable elements of a Scout rifle: a short overall length, light weight, good iron sights, a detachable box magazine, and enough accuracy to predict solid impacts at 450 yards. The one primary element we're missing is a hard-hitting caliber like 308 Winchester. But with the right (heavy) projectile selection, this rifle will be able to do everything I need from it in my hunting area, where we're most likely to encounter hogs and coyotes, not bears and moose. Perhaps at some point we'll swap the barrel on this scout rifle to another chambering like 6.5 Grendel.
The other odd point is, of course, the scope. We plan to test the this rifle at first with an extended eye relief (EER) scope, and then we'll perform a direct comparison with a low-power variable optic (LPVO) like the Falcon S8i I reviewed a while back. And how about throwing a red dot sight in the mix?
