What that means with a macro lens is that the widest available aperture will change with distance. As a portrait photographer, I generally shoot wide open, so it's no use for me to compare these lenses at whatever the available aperture of the macro lens is depending on the distance. Rather, it's important for me to see the ability of both lenses at wide open.
