In the first free practice session of the 2024 Formula 1 season's tenth round, Ferrari had to tackle multiple challenges. This time, the SF-24 single-seater's balance was far from optimal, unlike previous instances where Ferrari usually hit the track with a near-perfect setup. It's important to note that in FP1, the two cars had different aerodynamic configurations regarding the floor. Both, however, sported the new medium-high load rear wing designed to optimize efficiency.
Carlos Sainz had the new floor specification, modified in its initial portion and with several updates to the diffuser volume. This was evident not only in lap times but also in other aspects. Charles Leclerc, upon hitting the 4.657-kilometer Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Hard tires, encountered several issues with the rear. The rear end was too light at many points on the track, especially from mid-corner onwards. On the hard tires, Leclerc completed more laps, trying to make the base setup work by adjusting various settings.
Ferrari focused on the entry differential, a parameter crucial for correcting stability if set correctly. Additionally, they adjusted the incidence of the front wing, initially with "+2 clicks" and then lowered by one level. Despite these changes, the differences were minimal, forcing Leclerc to return to the pits for further adjustments. Technicians primarily focused on the rear, trying to move the balance backward to provide more grip to the rear tires.
Carlos Sainz also experienced some oversteer but managed it better, reporting over the radio that the balance was shifting towards understeer. For the second practice session, Ferrari made additional setup changes, significantly improving the situation. However, there were still stability differences between the two cars. Even with the soft tires, Leclerc faced some rear instability, while Sainz appeared more balanced in every circumstance, as seen in the onboard footage.
Red Bull also had a challenging day, struggling with oversteer in mid-corner due to the conditions of the Catalan track. Each team tried to address this behavior in their own way, with varying levels of success. Between the first and second practice sessions, the Milton Keynes team worked on the front end, similar to their approach at Imola, aiming to shift the balance towards the rear, just as Ferrari did.
