Toyota launched the PHEV version of the Crown Sport in Japan, which joins the existing self-charging hybrid with more power, a sportier chassis setup, and a zero-emission range.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the TNGA platform underpinning the Crown Sport has been finely tuned to deliver an “enjoyable driving experience,” emphasizing the connection between the driver and the vehicle.

At the front it gets what Toyota likes to call a "Hammerhead Shark" look featuring a double- layered nose with main headlamps positioned on the bumper. The model also gets a healthy dose of blacked-out highlights and a faux skid plate.

From the side, the Crown Sport is a pretty sporty car to look at, thanks to its elongated front hood and sleek roofline, as well as the flared-out rear wheel arches. From here, you can also notice the massive 21-inch alloy wheels the Crown Sport rides on, which is pretty big for its size.

At the rear, the Crown Sport is equally sporty, with its horizontally-mounted LED taillights, vertical side vents and its raking rear windscreen all added to its sportiness.

The new Toyota Crown Sport measures 4,720 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,565 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

On board, the Crown Sports is laden with both tech and comfort amenities, including a sizable 12.3-inch central infotainment display borrowed from the Crown Crossover model, while the cabin upholstery is offered in either Sand Brown or Black hue options. Helping to improve cabin NVH level is the new ‘sound-regulating’ headliner that reflects sounds within the cabin, allowing passengers to converse with each other easily.



The Crown Sport was first launched with a traditional hybrid setup that uses a 2.5-liter line-4 engine. The new PHEV option combines that engine with a larger electric motor and a larger battery pack under the floor —resulting in a total of 302 horsepower being sent to all four wheels. (It’s likely the same powertrain as what’s found in the RAV4 Prime PHEV.) Toyota says the Crown Sport PHEV has an electric-only range of 56 miles, and plugging into a 50-kW charger can replenish the battery to 80 percent in 38 minutes.
