They are also sometimes referred to as the compass termite and are endemic to the northern part of northern Australia, particularly around Darwin. These termites derive their name from the fact that their wedge shaped termite mound is aligned with its main skinny axis running north and south. This is to maximise the sun on the eastern and western walls of the mound with the thin wedge at the top, designed to reduce overheating when the sun is directly overhead.
You can see these mounds in tourist locations like Litchfield Park, however, this group you are about to see is much better than that. This is partially because this group of mounds is in a very remote location difficult to get to by car.
