In NFL History there are those few precious games where the stakes are raised. Beyond winning or losing, what transpires on the football field is a battle of wills, men enraged, collisions intent on harm. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers played in just such a game, and for the right to go to the Super Bowl! More than just a simple rivalry, more than a playoff competition and a clash between two great leaders of men, this was the kind of football game that is rarely played anymore. Two teams square off, coming straight at each other. Who is tougher? Who can withstand more pain? Who refuses to submit?
Before telling the tale of the battling bullies of the NFC and what some consider the true Super Bowl of that season, one first has to understand the scorn that long existed between Seahawk Head Coach Pete Carroll and San Francisco 49er Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Fierce enemies right out the gate, since they first started coaching against each other in college, their animosity spilled over into their professional promotions. And the dislike for each other carried down to their individual teams, as when they squared off on the football field it was always a battle and must-watch television.
The NFC Conference Championship of 2013 was set to be an even more brutal kind of war altogether. And each side understood, not everyone that went in was coming out. These were two teams to be feared for good reason. Their bloodletting clash at Century Link Field stands as one of the most epic games in Seahawks history.
